Does UV exposure cause indoor premises cable fading?

January 11, 2023

Superior Essex premises copper and fiber communications cables do not contain UV stabilizers and therefore can fade when exposed to sources of UV light. Indirect sunlight, LED, and other light can be sources of UV. Fading effects can develop depending on the distance from the source, length of exposure, intensity of exposure, and quality of the bulbs, lamps, or LEDs. Typically, UV light penetrates 25-50 microns while Superior Essex jacketing thicknesses are magnitudes thicker. Considering this superficial UV penetration, fading is purely cosmetic and will not negatively impact the mechanical or electrical performance of the cables. However, if a premises cable is being used outside with direct sunlight exposure, an indoor/outdoor version with UV protection should be selected.
