Superior Essex Communications Expands Red List Free Product Portfolio

September 27, 2021

Superior Essex Communications, the leading manufacturer and supplier of communications cable in North America, has further expanded its Red List Free certifications by achieving additional Living Product Challenge certified products. Both additional category and PowerWise® cable achieved these rigorous requirements.

The latest cables to earn Living Product Challenge certification are PowerWise LSHF, CAT 6A XP LSHF and CAT 6A+ XP LSHF, and receiving recertification is CAT 6+ LSHF. In total, Superior Essex offers eight product families that are designated Red List Free through our Living Product Challenge certified products and Declare Red List Free products. These cables support project teams in achieving LEED, WELL and Living Building Challenge certifications.

“Living Product Challenge certified is among the most rigorous multi-attribute certifications in the world,” said Annie Bevan, Global Head of Sustainability for Superior Essex. “In addition to answering the requirements for critical green building programs, they also meet the sustainable purchasing goals of organizations seeking Red List Free solutions. We’re proud to meet those needs and contribute to the environmental health of people and our planet.”

Superior Essex has successfully pursued environmental certifications for its communications cables for the past half-decade. The company produced the industry’s first Red List Free communications cable, CAT 6+ LSHF, in 2017. The cable achieved Imperative Certification under the Living Product Challenge, making it one of the world’s first Living Products. This cable recently was recertified under the program.

From 2018 to 2020, Superior Essex products that earned Red List Free or Declared status include CAT 5E with FEP Jacket, CAT 6 and CAT 6A with FEP Jacket, and CAT 6A U/FTP CMP/CMX PVDF.

The International Living Future Institute offers the Red List and Living Product Challenge certifications, among others. The Red List accounts for chemicals that have been designated as harmful to living creatures, including humans, or the environment. Manufacturers can earn one of three Red List designations for their products:

  • Red List Free: These products disclose 100% of their ingredients and don’t contain any Red List chemicals. They meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge Red List Imperative.
  • Red List Approved: These products meet the written requirements of the Living Building Challenge Red List Imperative but rely on one or more exceptions for compliance.
  • Red List Declared: These products disclose 100% of their ingredients but contain one or more Red List chemicals that aren’t covered by an exception.

The organization offers three pathways to Living Product Certification, of which Imperative Certification is the first. This designation requires that a product meet seven core imperatives for healthy and socially responsible products. Red List certification is one of them.

In other recent commitments to sustainability, Superior Essex announced that it is supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals, an urgent call for action for all countries to strive for sustainability. Superior Essex also recently was awarded a sixth consecutive Certified Environmental Facts designation and a seventh consecutive Zero Waste to Landfill certification from GreenCircle for products and processes at its manufacturing plant in Hoisington, Kansas.
