Superior Essex Communications Gains GreenCircle CEF Designation for Six Years – and Counting

September 20, 2021

Superior Essex Communications, the leading manufacturer and supplier of communications cable in North America, recently earned a sixth consecutive GreenCircle Certified Environmental Facts (CEF) designation for sustainable products and processes at its manufacturing plant in Hoisington, Kansas.

“We’re proud of maintaining the GreenCircle CEF designation for six years in a row. But our work does not end here,” said Annie Bevan, Global Head of Sustainability for the company. “Our team has worked hard to find new ways to reduce waste, source sustainable materials, create sustainable products, and earn green certifications. We’re going to continue to reduce our use of resources and our impact on the environment for many years to come.”

GreenCircle Certified, LLC, performs rigorous third-party evaluations to verify sustainability claims. Similar to a nutrition label, GreenCircle’s CEF designation is a multi-attribute certification that evaluates the sustainability of products and manufacturing processes. It means the organization has confirmed the sustainability attributes of Superior Essex products and processes made at the company’s Hoisington facility.

Those attributes include sustainable manufacturing processes such as a 20% reduction in scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions and a 37% reduction in water consumption. They also include sustainable packaging made of 100% recycled content and the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HPDs) included with many products manufactured in the facility. An EPD communicates information about the environmental impact of products over their lifecycles, while an HPD discloses chemicals in them.

The Hoisington manufacturing plant first earned CEF certification in 2015, one year after it gained GreenCircle Zero Waste to Landfill recognition, which indicates that the facility doesn’t send a single pound of waste to landfill. The Hoisington plant received Zero Waste certification in 2014 and has maintained it for seven consecutive years, one of very few able to do so.

In other recent commitments to sustainability, Superior Essex is supporting 12 out of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, an urgent call for action for all countries, developed and developing, to support sustainability worldwide. This means that the company has joined a global effort to improve the environment and other elements of sustainability, including economic growth, health and responsible consumption.
