Superior Essex Communications Receives GreenCircle Life Cycle Assessment Optimized Certification as Proof of Embodied Carbon Reduction

November 8, 2021

GreenCircle Certified has provided Life Cycle Assessment Optimized certification to Superior Essex Communications, a leading manufacturer and supplier of communications cables in North America. This third-party verification proves that 26 families of cables have reduced the company’s carbon impacts.

From 2014 to 2019, Superior Essex Communications reduced the embodied carbon of its products up to 15%. The company is one of the first manufacturers in the market to prove the optimization of its products.

“This certification is really a kudos to everyone who worked hard to review our manufacturing processes and change how we make our products,” said Annie Bevan, Head of Sustainability for Superior Essex. “I see this as justification for all the hard work we’ve put into building a sustainable manufacturing company in less than 10 years. I am excited to see how the team continues to drive this mission forward and I am extremely proud to prove our reductions with third-party verification.”

The company-wide commitment to sustainability fully began in 2014, when the company published the industry’s first Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). These reports disclose the life cycle impacts of more than 55 product families of communication cable. These declarations specifically indicated each product’s embodied carbon impact. In 2019, Superior Essex renewed its environmental product declarations and re-published EPDs for all 55 product families.

This time, however, it went beyond transparency, to provide proof of optimization. The company elected to further investigate the environmental impact of its products and how it was able to adapt its processes and materials to reduce the carbon emissions over the life cycle of each of them. Superior Essex Communications found it was able to lessen the environmental impact of 26 products, which GreenCircle confirmed through Life Cycle Assessment Optimized certification.

Some of those products include:

  • Category 6+ ScTP (F/UTP) – CMR (11% reduction)
  • 10Gain® XP Category 6A – CMR (10% reduction)
  • Category 6 – CMR (9% reduction)
  • 10Gain® Category 6A – CMR (9% reduction)

“We started to implement energy-saving measures at our Hoisington (Kansas) facility, and we confirmed a 20% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon impacts since 2016,” Brad Johnson, President of Superior Essex Communications touted. “We’re proud of how much we’ve been able to reduce the embodied carbon impact of our products at the manufacturing level and look forward to increasing our efforts in the next decade.”

GreenCircle certification means these cabling products can help building project teams achieve LEED v4.1 EPD option 2 credits. They also support owners in achieving sustainable purchasing goals and zero-carbon certification goals.

Superior Essex Communications has pledged to reduce its impact on people and the planet by source its manufacturing materials more responsibly. Recently, the company became the eighth corporate partner of The Copper Mark, the only comprehensive social and environmental assurance program for the copper industry. This agreement will allow Superior Essex to work with more certified copper suppliers, which will help its goal to decrease its impact on the environment.
