Superior Essex Communications Signs mindful MATERIALS Manufacturer Commitment

November 15, 2021

In response to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Materials Pledge, Superior Essex Communications – a leading manufacturer and supplier of communications cables in North America – has signed the mindful MATERIALS Manufacturer Materials Commitment. This is a commitment to diminish the collective impact of the green building industry on the planet and its people.

Superior Essex Communications is one of more than 50 global building product manufacturers promising to reduce their impacts across five sustainability categories: climate health, human health, ecosystem health and social health and equity within a circular economy. The goal of the collective agreement is for the building industry to find, specify and prefer products that improve those five areas.

“About 90% of all health ailments are due to everyday exposures and 11% of all global carbon emissions are due to the built environment supply chain,” said Annie Bevan, Global Head of Sustainability for the company. “To make a meaningful impact, we all must come together as a community and act.”

By signing this commitment, Superior Essex Communications aims to reduce its impact across all five buckets by focusing on its manufacturing processes, supply chain and research and development processes. This has been an ongoing goal of the company; its Hoisington, Kansas, plant has received Zero Waste to Landfill certification for seven years in a row.

“The built environment community must rally together, outside of our silos, to all commit to reducing our impact,” explained Brad Johnson, President of Superior Essex Communications. “By taking care of the areas we can control, we can do our part to create a more sustainable supply chain and help our customers achieve their Materials Pledge Commitments.”

Mindful MATERIALS, partner of the AIA Materials Pledge, seeks to further align the industry through a common framework, in a place that convenes common voices to signify collaboration and facilitates change through its library. It makes it simpler and easier for building owners, contractors and architects to find and utilize more sustainable products. Superior Essex Communications is the first cabling manufacturer to provide sustainability data within the library.

“We are proud to join the Manufacturer Materials Commitment and excited to continue to reduce the holistic impact of our products into the future,” said Johnson.

Pursuing better manufacturing practices, Superior Essex Communications recently received GreenCircle Certified Life Cycle Assessment Optimized certification. This proved that actions the company made from 2014 to 2019 reduced embodied carbon in 26 product families.
