Superior Essex Communications Achieves Certification Milestone of 8 Years Zero Waste to Landfill

ATLANTA, GA — For the eighth year in a row, Superior Essex Communications, a leading manufacturer and supplier of communications cable in North America, achieved Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) certification at its manufacturing facility in Hoisington, Kansas. GreenCircle Certified rigorously evaluated the company’s operations at its premises and OSP copper manufacturing facility and again found its waste diversion and reduction met the standards for 2021, as the facility has done since 2014.

“Earlier this year, we launched MissionNext, a comprehensive vision for our future. This Zero Waste to Landfill certification was the foundation of our sustainability directives when we first achieved it, and eight years later, it remains the driving force for our company’s goals,” said Brad Johnson, President of Superior Essex Communications. “Everyone who works at the Hoisington facility sets the example for the rest of our organization.”

The Zero Waste to Landfill initiative sparked the organizational redirection toward sustainable manufacturing nearly 10 years ago. Since, it has reevaluated waste creation and disposal, energy usage and water consumption at all its facilities in the United States. During the 2021 evaluation, GreenCircle confirmed that, since 2016, the Superior Essex Hoisington facility has reduced its water usage by over 20% and its generated waste by over 30%. In addition, Scope-1 and Scope-2 Carbon Emissions have been reduced by 16%. To holistically reduce their resource use, the company invested in a closed-loop system that recycles 100% of the water used in the extrusion process and installed energy-efficient lighting systems as well.

“Building on the efforts of the Hoisington team many years ago, Superior Essex identified that sustainability was the only way forward as a company,” said Annie Bevan, Global Head of Sustainability. “This cornerstone program is vital to our company’s character as a global corporate citizen as we connect the future of sustainable communications products.”
