Superior Essex Communications Commits to Science Based Targets Initiative to Reduce Carbon Emissions by 2030

July 25, 2022

Superior Essex Communications, a leading communications cable manufacturer in North America, is proud to announce that it has joined the growing list of companies committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science.

The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute and the World Wide Fund for Nature and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050. The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to speed up adoption, and assesses and approves companies’ targets. Superior Essex has set the ambitious goal to reduce its carbon emissions by 2030, aligning with the 1.5 degrees Celsius commitment established by the SBTi.

“We have been a leader in innovation and sustainability in the industry, and we’re proud to take this next step by committing to the SBTi. This will hold us accountable as we reduce our carbon emissions company wide,” said Brad Johnson, President of Superior Essex Communications.

To achieve the minimum carbon emissions reductions required by the SBTi Commitment, Superior Essex will continue to explore operations improvements including expanding renewable energy usage, high-efficiency fixture facility retrofits, and logistics and transit optimization. The company will also enable and empower the passionate Superior Essex employees that drive its sustainability initiatives. These directly support the recently launched MissionNext program. MissionNext aligns Superior Essex with a holistic set of metrics and goals to guide its comprehensive vision for the future of sustainable operations, workplace values and technological innovation.

The recent SBTi Commitment and MissionNext Program are continuations of nearly a decade of a robust dedication to sustainability including Zero Waste to Landfill manufacturing certification and a suite of product lines furnished with third-party verified embodied carbon reductions, as well as red list free, Declare and Living Product Challenge certifications.

“Now, more than ever, companies must double down on their sustainability commitments to reduce holistic impacts”, said Annie Bevan, Global Head of Sustainability for Superior Essex. “I have never been more proud of our organization to make these aggressive carbon reduction commitments and I’m excited to achieve and hopefully exceed our reduction targets by 2030.”
